Super Woman

Today I jumped out of a window. Uhm, no, let's start a little bit earlier in this story.

Little man locked us in his room. No, wait, let's start at the real beginning...

Last week hubby decided to turn the doorknob lock to the outside of little man's room. Little man gets out of bed, oh I would say, at least 32 times at night causing tremendous heartache, stress, fatigue, anger, and let's not forget lack of amusement to mommy and daddy.
I actually mentioned this lock idea to hubby three months ago, but apparently hearing the idea from another friend made it an even better idea.

We removed the lights and turned the doorknob to make the lock on the outside. It was a drastic situation and drastic measures had to be taken. Before you judge my mothering skills, come spend the evening with me and my son who comes out of his room over and over and over and over and over again. And turns on his light. And locks US out. So yes, this was a last resort, but a very good idea.

He actually did not cry. He didn't even pound on the door. He just sat in his bed and finally went to sleep. The next night he did the same. Hallelujah!

Fast forward to today. I put him down for his nap but he did not want to go to sleep. After about 30 minutes of hearing him play in his room, I finally went back in to lay down with him and snuggle. As I laid down he quickly rushed to the door. I heard a jingling twist or a turn of something familiar. And then a slam of the door. Oh my gosh. He locked us in!

Problem: No one else was home and wouldn't be for 2 more hours.
Problem: Roasted chicken was in the oven.
Problem: No wire hangers or tools that could possibly have any sharp edges to help me out of this situation were in his room. Stupid safe child proof room.

I assessed the situation as James Bond-like as I could, tried numerous wooden tools from little man's toolbox, and finally came to the conclusion that there was no possible way out of there through that door. I could not unlock it.

There was a window. Double paned, but it might work. There was also a screen. It wouldn't budge. After at least 20 minutes of trying to get it removed from the window little man handed me his wooden hammer. Now why didn't I think of that? It gave me just enough leverage to pry it out without bending the frame too much. Finally, the window was completely open. I looked outside. Crap! That's kind of a long jump. It was gonna hurt a little.

I told little man to look away (no use having him witness complete agony) and I made the jump. Shins still painfully intact, I ran around the house and into the front door and into the bedroom to slam that window shut before any little people who remain nameless could come up with another mischievous plan.

And that my friends, I doubt, is the end of this story. But for this moment atleast, I can rest easy knowing that it is possible to save the day, one toy wooden hammer at a time.

Wow! We ended up putting one of those plastic things on Annalise's doorknob for the very same reason. She wouldn't stay in bed or time out. Works like a charm! I would have just panicked! Kai, is one smart little man, love the hammer!

Did your cape help at all on the jump? What a story! I'm just glad he locked himself in there too - Would have been much more stressful if he had been on the other side of the door. One of those plastic know covers probably would be a good idea!
The hammer is funny - he knew what to do!

Funny part is, I vaguely remember doing that to my mother when she did the same thing to our door. Kids will be kids.

You crack me up! I loved your comment on my blog btw. ANd I want to you to know that if we lived in the same town, I would totally use you as our photographer. I feel like I'm cheating on you when I use someone else.

Hello cyber-friend! My 2.5 year old daughter used to do the same thing! She would come out about 100 times a night and not sleeping. It was pure misery! We tried to turn the door knob around and it messed it up, so we ended up having to replace it. What did we finally do? We gate her into her room. She still opens her door sometimes, but as soon as she sees the gate, she goes straight to bed. It is worth a try!
