attention all interior designers

Apartment/condo living usually has blinds for the windows. I prefer curtains, but for privacy/regulation issues we have to keep the blinds. ugh. Is it a complete faux pas to have blinds AND curtains, or how can I make that work?

I wouldn't have even questioned it...but I am not even a wannabe interior designer.

Well, blinds (especially apartment-type blinds) are a faux pas anyway, don't you think? But since you have to live with them, I say cover the horrible things with curtains! If your blinds are closed, your curtains probably will be, too - and then you won't see the blinds. If your curtains are open, your blinds will most likely be up, too - and then you still won't see the blinds.

Yes, you can do both! I have both in my house. Usually my curtains are more for decoration than function so we have 2 in wood blinds in some rooms, sheers in others. Something has to keep the peeping toms out!

I agree. Since you have to live with them, you might as well spice them up with something cute! If you really want to cover them up, just use a cornice (though that may not be the "look" you're going for...) and have curtains with it.

I am particularly fond of bamboo shades (seen here: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Nantucket-Bamboo-Roman-Shade-29-in.-x-72-in./3140179/product.html) which can be used with or without a curtain. They always bring a natural element into a room and go with anything. But if you have to keep your appointed blinds, I would definitely cover them with - at least - a sheer. It will definitely give a softer look to the lighting and room.

I am an apartment manager and live with awful vertical blinds myself. If this is what you live with too, then maybe you can do this: 1) carefully take each slat off and clip on some sheer or lightweight fabric instead. 2) if you have that boxy thing (lack of a better word) that clips on the top, measure it and make a similar boxy thing out of lightweight material to match your fabric. If you do this please post it to your blog. I'd love to see the result!
