Pretty
First of all, my girl screams coolness.
Second of all, she turns 9 in a week. Ca-razy.
Beyond our role as parents to teach her to be good and kind and lovely inside and out, we are extremely conscience of her having good self-esteem. And we work very hard at teaching and grounding her soulful goodness into all that she sees and hears. Outside of our home she has been called a B&*#@, ugly, fat, etc. BREAKS MY HEART. But we teach her otherwise. We NEED to teach her otherwise. We MUST.
I saw this incredible poetry slam entitled "pretty" (circa 2002)...and although it is INTENSE and rough (so be aware), I love love love it because at the end she talks about having a daughter one day. She decided that she won't tell her that she is pretty. Instead she will tell her that she is MORE than pretty. That pretty doesn't even begin to describe who she is. Pretty amazing, pretty intelligent, pretty creative.
I think I got that girl and more.

Only 8 and already hearing crap like that?!? .... Hold me.
Just watched the video.
wow.
I remember my father telling me things 'other' than I was the prettiest girl up there. I KNEW I wasn't the prettiest, but when he said that I just sparkled, or my FUN personality was shinning through, or I was really striking and confident and oozed personality... I actually though I had a chance. I have always appreciated him for that.
Totally agree....but I'm still gonna say that I think your daughter is beautiful. And you're right; she radiates coolness.
I think your daughter is beautiful and her little face under the hat looks just like you in your profile picture to the side :-D
Love the You Tube on Pretty. People in this world are so rude that even if you are pretty you need to be more - you need to focus on strong I think - Your daughter looks strong...and cool!
Loved this video! When I wa growing up I always asked my mom the same type of thing. She would always respond that I was "pretty enough." I thought it was insulting at the time, but now I understand what she meant by that and I appreciate that she said that.
Beautiful message to give her! We need more moms like you.
Will watch the video too...
